Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Meshsmoothing bug. Help please

Hi All,

I'm running MAYA 6.0, and I soetimes run into a problem with meshsmoothing. I'm modeling normally, extruding faces and edges, splitting faces, merging vertecies and all that, and I smooth to see how my model looks high-res. Sometimes it smoothes without a hitch, then all of a sudden I hit smooth and it takes forever or crashes. But when I make a new cube and smooth that, it does so without any problems.

Has anyone run into this and does anyone know a solution? Or what causes it?

Thanks,

Calvin

i find most of my crashes occur because i forget to delete history...make sure to do that before you smooth...and freeze transformations too. It's a good habit to get into. Saves you quite a few headaches.

Yeah, I delete history regularly as a habit when I model nowadays, but that doesn't seem to help with the smoothin bug I'm getting. user added image

Any help is appreciated. Or if anyone knows WHY it happens, that's great too. Maybe its in the way I model? O_o Can't imaging how though...

Thanks though, errethakbe. user added image

Didn't check the exact count but I'm sure its pretty low. It's just... weird, haha. I was working on it and it was going fine, smoothing to check and undoing to model then smoothing to check again. Then one day, bam! It takes two minutes to smooth the same model, or, MAYA crashes.

check ur smooth option box...make sure you don't have the divisions up too high...my compy tends to start slowing down at about 3/4 levels (and maya definately crashes)

Sometimes it helps to save your (unsmoothed) scene, restart maya and then smooth the object.

I set my options to 1 division.

The problem is still there even after I restart my PC. I'll post a screenshot a bit later to show you how low my mesh is if that'll help. The thing is, if I model something from scratch, it works fine. It's just some existing models that don't take a while or crash MAYA.

You might also just select the gemoetry you want to smooth and export it as a maya ascii...this will get rid of all information in the scene that you don't need. Optimize scene and do polygons->cleanup first though. Then open the exported model and see if u can smooth.

Thanks, errethakbe. I've tried exporting it as an .obj, and that sometimes works, but sometimes not. I'll try as ASCII

Did you try what errethakbe said about the subdivision levels? Or erasing the prefs folder?
