Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

I agree, #2 looks better. The only problem that I see now, is that he looks too reflective. Maybe if you turned down the lighting too, it would help some.

None taken Pbman, world would be a boring place if we all though the same! LOL!

I went for a eel look to him, as that was what sprang to mind when I was texturing him (plus I cought one the other week and looking at it made me think of the model)

What would you suggest?

I agree on the relfectiveness, its a hard balance to be honest, trying to keep the slimeyness and not go below or above points so to speak, hes got a few ramps controling various parts, spec, refelctivness etc with facing ratio's on them so I can always give it a tweek, which I will.

well that i the hard question

i think leaving that colour as a base would be nice but i think u need to build up some more variations in colour

for example i will use a trex - it has a base of green with grey ontop and black paerts/ spots and brown
which hlps build up the look
here is a quick example of a trex which has this look

i say this but on the same hand i would try to avoid a total pirates of the caribbean remake

Cheers for the imput Pbman, like I said my texturing's not the best, especially with organics, I feel ive got a decent grasp of on organics texturing but like I say organics ar so daunting to me.

I tried to give him a look of a dino on one colour pass I did (not used) but it ended up making him look more like a reptile/swamp thing that marine, hence why I went with this look. I would like to add big spots to him but i found it pretty tough going and i'm running out of time, ive got to get it pretty much wrapped up tomorrow as ill be back at work.

Ive changed the colour a bit on the epidermal map to more yellow to give, well I think, more intersting tones and a bit more "depth", the pic's attached.

It is a hard thing to do to be honest as ILM nailed the look for POTC 2-3 and as ive found, depending on the look your after its a bit of a limited colour pallete

edit - Sorry Jr who, I waqs typing this up when you posted.

I made that as a test for the SSS shader, I ended up changing it as a went along, one of the things that you see it all the time, make changes andthen forget about what youve done!, I ll knock it back and see what it look like with those settings!!!

Like I said I forgot about it as I changed it as I was liking the slimeyness!!
