You should use the incremental save function, get an external FW drive and make an apple script to copy all your workfile on the external HD everytime you close Maya or every day for exemple. Its not the best backup scheme but works for me!

BTW, make your environement color more greyish, it will make it easier to see the model on he renders.

And finaly, keep on working, it was going well!
