Newbie smoothing problem Maya 2016?

Hello guys! First time posting on here. I'm still new to Maya, but after a few projects I'm working on the head portion for a first character model. When I hit smooth mode I'm getting a weird checkered box on one of my faces. What exactly does this mean, and how can I correct it? It's strange to me how the selected problem face is also selecting an extra edge. Heres a few photos of the issue before and after smooth mode:
Also, I tried deleting the face and bridging but the problem just jumps around. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it a ton!
Thanks

I don't see a checkered pattern anywhere. But looking at the last screenshots, there may be some extra faces in there that are lumped together. After you've deleted those, you could try the fill hole option instead of bridge in this case.
