using trax

ok, i have a question and i hope someone has enough knowledge to give me the right info. i've done a walk cycle and a run cycle. i want to use the trax editor to combine both cycles. so far i've created clips for both cycles. do you import the clips to a non-animated version of the character? or do you have a scene open (ie the walk cycle), and then import the run clip to the character after you have made a walk clip in trax? i tried this, but when i then ran the two cycles together, the arms and everything are going everywhere. i'm flying blind right now, but if anyone has any good guidelines, that would bemighty helpful. thanks! by the way, i am totally new to using trax.
