Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Materials, shaders, what's the difference?

Can someone explain what the difference is between a 'material' and a 'shader'? I get confused when I read through the books.

thanks,
g.

i'm really not sure, but i think that material is term that 3d studio max i using and shader i equivalent in maya...

but then i remembered a very importan thing...F1 ...

Maya help says:

Material - In rendering, a description of what an object looks like when it is rendered.
Also known as shader.

Shader - The specification of properties and lighting for a surface.
See material.

Hope i helped...

Shader basically is the technical name for a material.

my definitions probably aren't technically accurate, but I generally define it as Material + Texture(s) = Shader.

So, with that in mind, the entire connected nodes in the Hypershade (materials, textures, utilities, etc) that creates an effect I define as a Shader or Shading Group.

The material nodes (Lambert, Blinn, etc) are what I refer to as materials.

That's just me, though. But it works to keep it straight in my head when I explain it to others. user added image
