How can I make a giraffe smile

Sorry me again, I'm trying to learn Maya at a hundred miles an hour for a client...

I've been using the Maya online tutorials on making a smiling face on a model of a human face but when I try and apply the same technique to my model of a giraffe it doesnt work very well. Could someone tell me the best way to go about making him smile?
No jokes about tickling him please :-)

Is there a prize for newbie who asks the most questions user added image

I've tried making the mouth and cheeks etc into a cluster, everything worked fine until I started using the paintbrush to add more deform weight to certain areas like the lips but it just messed the mouth up.
