Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Plus Minus Average Node Problem

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Plus Minus Average Node in MAYA 4.5. I'm trying to mix two bump maps together. In ver. 3.0, when I connect the second texture's Out Alpha to the Plus Minus Average's Input1D, all I have to do is right click and choose Connect Next Available. When I try to do it in Ver 4.5, Connect Next Available doesn't show up when I RMB.

Help please.user added image

Shift + MMB drag-drop the bump maps on to the +/- Avg node (in hypershade) and you get a connection editor. With that you can easily make the connections.

Sorry about the previous answer...not an accurate one (is valid for most of the nodes in hypershade). Here's a better one:

Take a look at the picture below.
- First click and hold on the output triangle (1) of the first bump map node and select outAlpha from the pop-up menu.
- Then click and hold on the input triangle (2) of the +/- avg node and select input1D[n] -> [0]
- Repeat the same for the other bump map. Connect from 3 to 4 (select input1D[n] -> [1] this time)

You can continue adding virtually as many inputs to the +/- avg node as you like. There will be always one free index for the next connection.

Hope this helps...

Thanks, K-Brown. It worked perfectly! I still don't know why they had to go change things around though. By the way, love your motto.
