Polygon Booleans Union Fiasco

Ok i'm still somewhat new to maya, but i've been giving it all my time. I started on the Cartoon dog tutorial bout 3 days ago to see if i could do it but i ran into a few problems. Specificly when i tried to merge my converted polygon pieces, I would do exactly as it showed, but mine only disapeared. I seem to have tried everything in my power to remedy this problem but no hope is in site.

The error message I got after ctrl + z was: No vertices were merged. Tolerance too large - no geometry left after merge

eternaly greatful for any help

Update: if anyone's taken an interrest to this

The objects disapear when i do a polygon merge with the head neck and torso piece (one piece) and the tail. But the program would let me merge the ear and the tail, even with the huge distance between them. but still everything i try merging with the body disapears. quite a perdicament...

Still greatfull for any help given

Ok I got it! I was looking around and some other guys had the same problem the answer if anyone cares is that the boolean union doesn't always work and later in the vid he shows you another way to "stich" it together using the polygon split tool and the combine tool
