This hand is proving difficult

Hi,

I've not yet joined the fingers to the hand yet. Overall, the shape is fairly good. The creases on the knuckles are proving difficult though. I wondered, if I was to simply model them, and then bump or normal map the creases, could it still look ok? Wondering whether it would be reasonable to do this before I look into it, or whether I should just keep at the modeling.

I’d say go with the bump map.

Yeah what the big yellow ball said, using bump maps is recomended, especially if you will model the whole character.

Thanks for the replies guys. Got it sorted to an extent, though I'm still not convinced by the knuckles. Gonna keep at the modeling for a few more hours, and then perhaps try it with bump maps too for the practice.

I'd model it if I was you, you'll get better deformations when you animate it as you can paint the weights better, Use bumps for finer detials not something like this.

Just practice at it, theres lots of tutorials out there that go over how to make all the creases, working thm into the topology etc etc

yeah I'm gonna keep modeling it. Might try and make a lower version, bumped, later on. I've got another question - I've modeled the hand so far flat, as per the image. In real life, the hand has a natural curve to it, viewed head on.

How can I bend my whole object slightly? I've looked at bend deformers in Maya help, and the info there is vague at best, plus it seems to be for animation rather than modeling. If anyone has used Lightwave before, then an equivalent of its bend tool would be prefect.

Anyone any ideas?

use the bend deformer, once its bent to how you want it then delete the history on the hand to save the bend. Or use a lattice

Thanks for the responses. I've been trying the bend deformer, and I understand how it works apart from not being able to choose what plane it bends on; I can get it to bend my hand several ways, but not the one I want. I line it up to bend across the palm, viewed from the front, but instead it bends from front to back. I've checked the help files and don't see much about how to orientate the bend.

Can you advise?
