MattTheMan vs. magicsy

Photorealistic interior scene, 4 weeks to do it. All work done inside Maya and MR, with Photoshop, I guess... or w/e. Alright well, I cant do anything 2day or 2morrow but the next day I will get started. Im in canada and I get home tommorow night.
so anyway, good luck! oh and for the poll, you can vote for yourself once

BTW the poll times out in 35 days, which is 7 days after the challenge ends.

magicsy, please vote for yourself once

Cool! Im home now, so I will be starting soon. Oh, and if you go to www.cgtalk.com and register, and you go to the Alias Maya section in the (application specific) section, and from there to the rendering section, there is an entire, 70-page thread on VRay style Mental Ray renders.

Thanks, and good luck to you too! I know this isnt much, but I couldnt resist previewing what a shelf of the room i will make will look like. I still have to up the quality a lot, and I cant find the caustics from the vases, but they look really cool and simply to me. Here, 10 mins of work.

Alright! I figured out how ima render my scene! Now, this is VERY low quality. Took about 40 mins in all to render. Anyway, no textures, and the reflective plane is there just for refs. Very low quality.

fg rays: 350
FINAL fg rays will be between 2000-4000
photon accuracy for GI: 160
FINAL photon accuracy for GI will be around 500-800

heres the pic

Alright so I got some more stuff done. Im pushing for mor quality now... and the wood on the floor is a crappy placeholder. Anyway.

So here it is, but with 650 fg rays... noice has improbved a bit.
also i assigned a glossy DGS material for the metal on the chair... not quite satisfied with it tho.

Looking good man. It is kind of grainy but I think thats due to min max radius in fg or maybe gi accuracy. You are getting some nice shadow action happening now.

Hey!
No its not the min max thing... I rendered this one with 1200 FG rays and Min 0.01 Max 0.5, and it still looks grainy like crap. I will add a back wall so that it will show up in the chair's reflection. Also for photons I used GI accuracy 350.

Render took 1 hr 2 mins.

doesnt look much better then it did...

Anybody knows how to fix this horrid grainy shadow???

JUST so you know, I upped the sampling for the MR area lights from (2,2) and (3,3) to (3,3) and (8,8) on both lights, and we will see if it helps next render. God, i hope the next render wont take forever...
