Roughen a mesh with Deformations?

Is there an easy way to roughen a mesh up?

I have a tree log which I'd like to make the mesh rough looking.

A deformation of script?

I remember fooling around in 3ds max years ago and there was an easy way to roughen up a mesh, one step method (with some variables).

Don't mention materials (e.g. bump map) because I really would like to roughen the mesh up physically.

Theres a randomize MEL Script thats on highend 3d that you can use for that

That's ok for straight-on viewing of the object, but I want to be able to see the roughness along the profile edge of the object.

The bump/displacement will help in more of a micro-level of roughness.

In actually this log is more like a wild/evil kind of thing where you have scales of bark (like a palm tree) or bark with a lot of pock marks.

no a bump will not affect the profile but the displacement will and you can combine the two. So you could have your displacement map creating the larger details and use the bump to add finer detail that doesn't need to change the profile. Modelling it all will take forever.

The displacement map works pretty good. But I have no real-time preview of it any of my views.

Is that because I am only using crappy on-board video, and have no hardware acceleration?
