Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

toon spider

Here's a clay render of a cartoon spider I am working on. Still a bit of work around the joints to do as well as the spinnerets and pedialps, which are not done at all yet. Then the joys of texturing and rigging it user added image

Looking pretty sweet. Were you planning on putting hairs on it? I think that'd be awesome.

yeap, though not totally covered. I'm trying to give it a sort of bristly appearance.

Bit more of an update. I have put some more geometry in around the leg joints to define them a bit better, and a bit of work around the eyes to give him some eyelids. Still a bit of a problem with gaps around the eyeballs though. I'm not sure how I am going to deal with this since the eyes are large and spherical. I think I might use a deformer lattice on them to flatten them a bit and make the eyelid shape a bit flatter.

Looking good. And cool idea about the hair. That's more along the lines I was thinking of, not a furry spider, but a bristly tarantula type.

Can't wait to see some updates!

I like it alot. Good job on the eyes makes it look good. Also are you planning on animating it? Can't wait to see.

yes I'm going to fully rig it and (eventually) animate it. I have a few little animated shorts in mind, but they need other characters. This one is the most complex though.

When fiddling around with the eyes, I noticed some really ugly geometry because of my use of extrude. I've neatened it up alot now, given it some eyelids, and shaped the eyes with a lattice deformer. Just a little work around the mouth and the main face area will be done.

Just resurrecting my old thread. I've started to UV map the spider. Done one leg and I'll use that to help me with the others. The back end was made from a sphere, so that will be easy. This render has the original model in the background.

finally, all the UVs cut from the tangly square of chaos. I still need to stitch the head together and tidy a couple of the legs a little, but the body is fine.
