Quick question about workflow

I'm quite new to maya and i was just wondering what the workflow for face shapes is on a character so i don't lose them all when i skin it. Is there any particular order to it?

sorry about that im just moved from xsi and im a bit impatient and ive got an assignment deadline, but i didnt ask about another problem with modelling i actually searched forums and the manual so i do that first.
