component mode?

im trying to follow one of digitial tutors video tutorials. he presses some button to go to component mode..which i dont know how to do. help please? its a key

Open up Maya. Hit F1 and read the "essentials" chapter...it's all right there.

either f8 or right click on an object and select ur component from the marking menu
