Illustrator files

OK, so maybe I'm not a newbie, but this seems like such a basic problem. I'm trying to import some Illustrator curves into Maya, but it keeps giving me the error "can't ungroup leaf-level transforms". Anyone ever seen this and know a way around it?

I tried saving the curves as eps and trying that instead, but maya tells me it's an "Unrecognized file type".

Anyone?

Thanks Mirek. I figured out though that if I saved it as Illustrator 5.0/5.5, it works fine in Maya.
