extruding problem

When i extrude the edges of the neck, they go in different direction. How do i solve this problem and why did this happen out of no where?

This happens. It is not an error.

When it happens you need to click the blue dot and extrude in the world space.

The behavior you are seeing is because Maya cannot determine a uniform normal direction in local space to extrude along.
