Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Any Render masterminds?!

Hey Guys,

I need help big time. Everyone on here is great and always helpful and really smart. I totally appreciate everyones help.

Whenever I render in mental ray, really black color (or in this example the background!) when rendered as a Tiff, PSD, or whatever (except jpeg which isnt what I want), it makes the background transparent instead of black like it is suppose to show.

Does anyone have any clue as to why? And how can I change it so it doesnt make the background or any of the black color transparent?!

Thanks so much guys!!

Thank you for your help, that did fix part of the problem, which is great, but a more complex example is here....

See where all the black areas would be on the car (even some areas that are not black) are transparent!! I have no idea why!

Any ideas on that?

Thanks again so much!

I haven't got Maya open right now, but have you checked (Render Globals maybe?) to see if there's some way to turn off transparency/alpha in your renders?

I mean render it in Maya with the alpha channel off.

If you want to sort it out in photoshop just use a black background and then flatten the image.

or just render it out as a .tga with 24 bits per pixel, it doesnt contain an alpha channel.

but simplest thing would be what gster said

Thank you guys SO much for all your suggestions and input. I tried various things that were asked so let me give results and tell you what I have found out so far...

-I went to render globals and turned off alpha channel and it was to no avail, still the same problem.

-I have photoshop CS on windows, so I am not sure what the deal is, it should work fine like you said pbman (by the way, thanks a TON for all your research.)

-I tried tiff, targa, and Photoshop outputs and they all give me the same result

-One thing I tried that makes me wonder, is I was using a car paint shader that comes with Mental ray. I changed the shader to a regular blinn shader with some slight modifications and walaa, it worked. I wonder why it makes the dark spots transparent on the car paint shader? Oh well I figured out a way to get around it.

Thank you guys so much for all of your help!!!!
