This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Pen in Water

Started modeling this pen a while ago. Still a bit more to do.

Thanx Altadena.
The water is just a dielectric material.

Did some more work on this. No background yet. I might throw in a store maybe. I don't know why, but the pen seems to change colors in the glass.

Added a dumpster to the scene and added a glass window onto the store. Does anybody think that the window is too reflective?

looks good so far, but a few things are bothering me..

1 - the table in the foreground looks too reflective.
2 - the jagged edge of the awning kind of looks odd - too big and uneven.
3 - why is there a dumpster next to a dining area? - eugh user added image
4 - the liquid in the glass looks odd - it seems to be dipping in the middle...
5 - last, why is there a pen in the glass?

Oh, the dumpster was just there for showing off, I'm not gonna keep it there. At some point I would batch render so the camera would go around the back of the cafe. I haven't modeled the back of the cafe yet, so I just threw it out front. Those jagged edges were more of the same really- just placeholders for later. I'm really gonna put one of those triangular shaped ones, because there'll be less of a pain to map out. And, the table thing I guess I could fix.
I threw a pen in the water cuz I thought it'd be more spontaneous than a straw, but if its too odd, then I'll change that too. In the earlier posts, I messed up the meniscus of the liquid but I fixed it in the later posts though it's hard to see. Thanx for the crits.

First thing that i noticed is the fact that your scene is way too dark... even for a night scene. In a place like this you would have outdoor lamps, and other lights to illuminate the area for the customers... or what ever. Plus if you chose a daytime scene it would probably make things look allot better. Maybe try a physical Sun?

The Pen in water it's self looks pretty good, thought the glass texture isn't quite there, but i can't pin exactly what it is thats letting it down.

Other than that, the layout seems pretty good, and modeling is not too shabby either user added image
