Brilliant! Rope looks great! Old and perfectly medievel. Right on.

Now one more thing.... user added image the metal loop looks like it was made out of an anodized aluminum alloy , not a metal available in the middle ages! So i'm being picky but what about a wrought-iron look?

Keep it up - it's a great looking machine!

what about a wire-frame view of that rope?

Wireframe plus how I made the rope.

Make a CV Curve
Spiral it a bit (uneven gives best results.)
Add a Nurbs Circle.
Extrude with tube selected.
Add texture & bumpmap.

Stretch it to your scene and thats it.

great results... do you use a plugin for the spiral? I used 'spiralizer' for the handle on my axe which worked really well.

I just had a look at highend and they seem t have a few plugins that do the spirals.

I'm getting some now to check them out.

I'm getting some now to check them out.

spiralling is such a problem? just make out of a circle an animation - start with rotation of 0 degree, end keyframe has X*360 ( depending how often you want it rotated). and then add a translation along the spiral axis. in trax you make the animation between the keys linear (so it does not get more detailed at the start and end). and then use that animation to model. with a animation snapshot, then select all the circles you just made, and loft between them. the only problem is, that the rotation is very perfect user added image

That's an interesting technique Babyduck but i believe you end up with a series of circles and not a spiral - which is a continuous single curve - with a spiral you can either extrude a curve using the spiral as a path (as gary1953 here did) or duplicate the spiral and use birail to create a surface - which is what i did on the leather on the grip of my axe... correct me if i'm wrong user added image
