Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

the blendshapes look great user added image

how do you make the blendshapes? are they on the poly mesh, or directly in subd (if the head is subd at all) ?

Blendshapes are pretty easy to do the only time consuming part it shaping the model to get the look you want....
All you do is make a copy of you original geometry adn model it to the way you want. Then select the copy then shift select the orignial go Deform> create blendshapes. Then Sliders come up.

I do all my shapeing in sub-d then covert back to poly add a smooth for the blends...

ok thanks - that is what i wanted to know. i am right now looking for ideas to make a very very low poly character for a animation. and my first thought was to finish the animation with the low poly version - so that i have less stress with rigging it. and when the animation is ready - to just convert the character with a proxy to subd. the shaping in subd and then converting back to poly for the blendshapes sounds very good to me. so much to learn yet user added image
