School Assignment

Hi guys

I'm doing this school assignment. I have to make an animation. First I wanted to make some kind of human evolution animation. But now I changed my ideas

I'm planning to make some kind of giant clock that stands for history. Its turning. On the clock there are 3 images, a book, a empty painting, and an empty piece of movietapen (hope you understand what i mean). On the foreground theres a picture of 2 hands (3d) after a famous painting of michelangelo. You can see the hands in the book, at the painting and on the movie tape and of course in the spaces between. It should stand for the history and future of that painting.

But because I just started using Maya, I could use all the help and comments I can get. So please comment and help!!

This is what I got so far:

well, i guess you're using polys, in this case i would use NURBS, cause the book looks a little 'boxy'. depending on the amount of time you have to do the project, you can mess with NURBS. i made a series of CV curves for profiles then duplicated and lofted them, and here is the result i got:

Goni, I see what you mean. I'll try to make it that way!! That'll look even better.

And stijn... I'm in Vwo, this is for the subject art... I've always been very interested in designing on the computer so this time I got the change to make an animation and I took it. This way i can combine hobby and school user added image

heeej,
at the moment I'm working on the piece of movietape. But i can't get any further. I made it with curves. This is what I've got so far

user added image

After this is converted the piece into subdivs, because this wasn't so smooth. But than I couldn't change the color of each seperate face. I don't know how to texture so can anyone help me to get a smooth piece of movietape with different colors? All ideas are very very welcome!

Probably the simplest way would be to learn to texture

ha ha...

Sometimes the answer is in the question.

PS, heres a little tip for you seeing as that you are running Maya 6 on XP. If you disable the XP themes and have XP set for best performance, as oppossed to best look... you'll get a hell of a lot more ram to play with, and Maya will be a lot quicker to use.

To get smoother edges on the tape just select all the edges, goto edit poly>Normals> Soften|Harden

Im not sure if thats the problem you were having, but nonethe less a good tool to know in any project.

txs all,
btw rubberchicken, my problem is that I haven't got the time to learn textures, because i have to learn animating too and my work must be finished in 4 weeks, and I only got about 1 hour a day to work on it. I sort of rushed in this project without knowing how much work it is for a beginner!

But if anyone knows a quick way to learn texturing or a site with good tutorials, please tell me!!

i think the problem you have with the movietape looking choppy is that you probaly have 'flat shade' on (select 'smooth shade all' instead) Shading>Smooth Shader All. and did you use the EP curve tool or the CV curve tool? CV curve tool gives better results most of the time.
