replacing a lost surface

I was going thru a tutorial and i noticed that I deleted a surface and whent back a few steps ,I can`t get back far enough to fix my mistake.I`m working in polygons...is there a method of just replacing the lost surface?????

Polygons > Append to Polygon Tool.

The open edges of the missing area will thicken. Click on each edge in consecutive order to fill in the surface, following the direction of the small purple arrow heads that appear.

Press Enter when done.

Be sure to check the surface normal to make sure it matches the rest of the model.

maybe not as good but if the hole is enclosed (has edges all the way around) then select all the edges and do edit polygons -> fill hole.

hmm, a little script to run when an enclosed edge is selected and to fill it could be a good gentle start into MEL scripting (I hope!)...
