I had the same issue just last night. **Fires up Maya** Windows > Settings/Preferences > Preferences. On the left, its under Interfaces (1st one on the list). Look for "Open Attribute Editor" in the right window. Theres options for "In Seperate Window" or "In Maya Main Menu." Just check it to the "In Seperate Window" and your all set.
