Strata to Maya

Hi,

I recently converted from strata 3d to Maya and have found it much more powerful. However there was an effect I could get in strata called radiosity. I know that the equivalent in Maya is global illumination with mental ray but I can't get the same look. In Strata a point light in a room could on it's own create a lot of ambient light. When I render with mental ray I still get really dark shadows but I expect to see more even lighting. I even set the light sources to emit photons but the dark shadows don't seem to receive any of the secondary light bounces.

If anybody has used Strata and knows what I'm talking about or can help at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.
