Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Tournament - Rules - Please Read

Alright, these are the rules for Tournaments:

- All tournaments will either be decided by M (Me user added image), or someone will start up a thread with the following structure containing info on the "tournament idea" they have:

Tournament Idea - (8 person or 16 person)

- If you want to suggest a tournament, there cannot be any more than 2 tournaments currently taking place. Also, you have to state how many people they will be (in title) and then what the theme will be for each round, and any other additional info (noobies), (advanced), (Polygons only, etc).

- In tournaments, each round will be 1 week to 3 weeks.

- The first 2 tournaments will be organised by M (Me user added image), and then after that it will either be me or your requests user added image.

- If a Tournament Idea is passed, then I will set up the sign up thread, that will look like below:

Tournament #1 - Sign up thread

- If it is a 8 person tournament, after the first 8 people to post to say they want to join, get in (with exceptions if someone has a reputation to not follow through, or they do not meet the rules).

- The tournament will not be started until all of the competators to fit the size of the tournament have joined. If enough competators cannot be aquired over a 1-2 week period, then the tournament size will be reduced in size.

- I will then choose randomly the order the competators fit into the tournament ladder. Once this is done I will set up forms in the following fashion (based on a 8 person tournament):

Tournament #1 - Competator1, Competator2
Tournament #1 - Competator3, Competator4
Tournament #1 - Competator5, Competator6
Tournament #1 - Competator7, Competator8

- Each one of these threads will be originally set up by M (Me user added image), and with a ladder image as the first post, the 2 competators in that thread can start to compete.

- At the ending time of each round, The moderators will judge the battlers and figure out the people who continue to the next round.

- Each new round has a new theme to go with it.

- On slight occasions will there be a 32 person tournament, that is quite large.

- Your final image for each round say "FINAL RENDER" along with the image.

- The Final Winner will receive Points (maybe, thats kevins decision)
- The final Winner will receive a Badge user added image.

You will have to "sign up" through a thread. You simply say something like, ( I want to compete in this challenge).. and then the first 8 people (for a 8 person tournament) get to compete user added image. Hope this makes sence.

Ah, well.. forgetting, just letting you guys all know... i have to give props to this tournament idea.. seeing twisted was the one that originally thought of the idea to have more than 2 people competing at a time user added image, thats what has brought this into effect. Hopefully it takes off user added image.

thanks for the cred M, probably more than i deserved looking back. but i actually have some relevent questions for once.

1) Are non-maya programs allowed in SM tournements like Bryce, LightWave, 3D Studio Max, And the many others?

2) Are "Final Renders" allowed to be edited in Paint Shop Pro, Or Photoshop(any 2d editing program)?

3) Are we allowed any help on the projects? (Say messeging a friend online or talking to a family member to get someone elses opinion on things?) (i dont see why this would be an issue. it woudl kinda be like C&C. but just incase.

4) Are we allowed to have out of tournement help? Such as a 3d modeling friend, not in the tournement, helps make part of your project(not all or most), and you submit it? As long as you give notice saying you got help from said person. (this i think will most likely be against the rules... just posted it so noone can come back later saying it wasnt in the rules user added image, always good to look ahead).

5) You covered this a little in your rules. but let me get this strait. After the first 2 tournements. if i come up with say a 4-6-8 person tournement. and theres no other oging on aat the time. am i allowed to declare myself the judge for it? But for fairness sake i woudl not participate because of conflicting interest.

um.. i could prolly come up with some more questions but i dont want to have a small novel of questions. lol. but ill get some more later and space them outuser added image

Hey Twisted, great questions..you can definately propose a tournament.. but if it doesnt go through me then it wont be able to start a sign up sheet... after that phase the signups go In and the tournament will start up. Proposing a tournament though does not give you privledges to judge. That will still be done by the moderators. You can join your own tournament though.. as you technically should always join your own tournament... seeing its terrible to start up one and not being able to compete in it user added image. So you get to choose the topics and how many people there are in a tournament. Hope this answers that user added image.

I was wondering about #2 because M told pony he could smudge the hooves for his tournement project to make it look like skin transition.. so i wondered if it was legal.

#4, yes i was kiddinguser added image, i figured it wasnt allowed. just making sureuser added image.

And will there be anyway for non mods to judge tournements? i would love to judgesome battles or tournements. but i wont be a mod here for obvious reasons.

For question 2, sorry.. I said that more as a joke twisted... i didnt actually think he would take it serious.. as it does say that in the rules. Sorry for confusion there.. it was one of those stupid things.. like (how can i fix this light).. (put in a new one). For the judging, the reason for that has nothing to do with just being a mod.. but if others are allowed to judge, then everyone would want to start up a tournament.. and thats one thing that isnt really needed. Overtime David the programmer may be able to figure out some kinda judging system with points that everyone can do. I was thinking of a idea last night in bed.. let me know what you think. Once both final renders are in, a new thread is always opened, which will be used for "judging". Now both final renders get put into this thread and then there will be certain guidelines stated at the beginning of all of those threads saying the rules. You will do it on a point system out of 5 or 6 areas just like pony did for Vectorman VS M. This way you could prove why you voted for a person, and it would eliminate friendship votes. As judging is a very serious task. As of now though we will just stick to the mods judging unless a mod is in the challenge. BTW the things i have just said are a brainwave, and in no way is this final, and theres chances it wouldnt work out at all.. or that there are other things that would come into account. Its quite detailed twisted.. hope you understand user added image. Maybe kevin can say something about this though.

i kinda get what your saying and it sounds like a good idea to me. Sorry i always seem to be a pain, i always bilieve in questioning authority, or they may just try and get away with something. If their actions are being monitored, no foul playuser added image. I know it can get anoying... sorry in advance.

So your thnking of maybe a checksum list? like 10 catagories with 0-10 points per catogory(would be easiest) if you need any help on idea or catogories i can always help. I have a lot of time on my hands sinse i broke my leg.

If you want soe catogories could be things like originality, texturing, smoothness, though(put into the ebject), model(how well it came out of course), final product, and some others...

Then a list stating your over all points for each person would make it a lot cleaerer as to why each person got what they did.

Just a thought unless i misinterpreted your idea.user added image(innocent look)

Basically yea, im thinking of a checksum list like they do on homework at schools. You know, like you said.. 1-10 for different categories. then you tally up them together to get a overall..which then if there were 4 people that did that per person, you would add up all the points and divide it by the number of people that have posted.. so in this case, 4.. so lets say someone scored 75 points and then 40 points and then 80 points and then 60 points.. thats a total of 255, divided by the number of people who judged (4) and the average is 63.75 user added image. Good idea twisted user added image. BTW, if there are any bogus ratings, like 1 on this, 0 on this etc.. then those people who judge would be banned. Once again I have to look into this, and figure out an organised way to do this. Cya

to avoid somewhat unfair judging, bias and so on you could have a clear criteria for numbering? such as say Originality in the example the cute pets tournement. Is someone uses something completely original and makes there own refernces and everything such as pony's horse/woman. that should set them in the 7-10 range at least. They use an already existing creature, but something not comon, or a good idea such as the "critter" i think VectorMan used would be at least a 4-8 range. Then say.. something very common and didnt really need any thought put into it (i have no examples from the current tournement so i think thats a good thing actually) would be about 1-5 range. 0's should be impossible unless not applicable such as texture in an untextured model. Anything someone does is not worthless.

You would have to set up some criteria for each so somene coudlnt say give pony's outstanding first round model a 3 on mode, a 2 on smoothness and so on, which would be clearly unjust.

Even if you think something is common sense and no need to explain it. just because its obvious to you doesnt mean it is to everyone. You would be amazed the people you need to spell everything out for.

And hybrid, M had the idea, i just embelished... a lot. lol. I overthink things to much. I have surgery in 7 hours i better get some sleep. later.
