Selecting hulls?

I have some questions about selecting hulls.
After watching 1 & 2 of the Yamaha tutorial I began to practice making tires and rims. I added isoparms to the inner portion of the tire and scaled the hulls to flatten the inner portion of the tire. I went into object mode then back to hulls. I noticed that when I tried to select hulls after scaling that the hulls did not show in shaded view.

When I switched to wireframe and keystroke 1, I was able to see the hulls but the combination of other light colored wireframes of the rim make it a bit tricky to select exactly what I want.

Is there an easy way to select hulls that seem to vanish in the surface of a shaded view object? Should I be viewing the object in Xray? Or is there a command key that will highlight all the hulls of an object while in shdaded view?

In wireframe what is the best way to select hulls when other obejcts are in close proximity? Can the thickness of the wireframe line be modified with a keystroke?
