Oliphant Tutorial-- too many polys in converting from sub-divs

Hi there, it's a fantastic tutorial but I when I convert my subdiv model into polygon and then subdiv and then poly again and so on... the details fold up! It looks like I have million+ polygon model! And when I keep going converting it gets more and more detailed. How can I keep my detail level at its level? sorry for my bad english I hope I explained my trouble. I'm using Maya 6 Unlimited.

hey
under the convert sudiv's to poly make sure that verticies is selected not adaptive
adaptive makes the mesh have a high count whereas verticies keeps the count low

hope this helps
