Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

why cant i see particles

why cant i see particles when i render.

because either your not in hardware rendering, or it dosn't have a texture set to it.

I have the same problem when I try to render points.

Only particle types designated as software (says s/w next to the particle type) can be rendered with the normal Maya render. Otherwise, you have to use the Hardware render.
