Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Running sluggish during texture mode

G'day there, I'm a student who recently just installed Maya 8.5. I was told my specs would be fine for running Maya but whenever I'm zoomed in on my model; mainly texture mode, it runs very sluggish and slow when rotating etc.

These are my specs (I recently bought this computer 1 1/2 months ago.)

Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz
1023.5 MB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT (GeForce 7600 GT)
Running Windows XP Proffesional SP2

I'm tried adjuststing settings etc. but makes no dif, so what would be the best thing to do right now?

Thanks for helpin.user added image

those specs look fine. it is possibly the video card driver, try getting the latest driver from nvidia.

In a word, nope.

Not unless your main mem is maxed out already. How much mem is your system using when you've loaded the model/s that you're having troubles with? (ctrl-alt-delete brings up the task manager that will tell you what the Commit Charge is. As long as it under 1024 MB, more mem aint gunna do squat)

Also, what are the specs of the
(a) texture map(res)
(b) scene (# of verts, faces, edges)

Further more, how many fps are you getting? There's a heads-up-display option that will display it at all times on the screen.

Just lastly, when you say it's slow.. In comparison to what? Another system with maya and the same model and texture on it, or as compared to a 3d game?

actually, there is a big problem with the nvidia drivers thats out now for the geForce series. i think its 93.71
im having some issues too with the 7600 card.
i had to even go back to using my onboard vid card, it got so frustrating.

Well first I've only been using Maya for 5 weeks. Basiclly it's just a Low Poly Elephant. Verts: 730 Edges: 1470 Faces: 744
This is only basiclly a practice thing, but I just hate to think what'll be like when we move to much higher stuff in the year,

My commit charge is 585m/2459m so that's fine.

How do you check Fps?

When I say slow, basiclly when I go in close and I'm rotating around the model it skips, slow etc. in comparison to the machines at Tafe which have lower Processors, Ram etc. (not sure about the 3d card yet) and also people I know who are running machines with older processors, less ram.

Edit: Yes I've got the 93.71 Forceware driver which is the latest so far. Games run fine with this card though.

Games are a different kettle of fish to maya, have a look and see if you can get the older drivers, think theres a site that you can get them form but I dont know the address.

Well I've got an older Nvidia driver which came on the installation disc. I'll uninstall my current driver and reinstall the older and see what happens.

Cheers

They will tell you that its not their problem, its Autodesks, if you e-mail them they will tell you that the card is not qualified to run Maya (no gforces are officially qualified) and that its not their problem as they give you a list of cards that are qualified.

The best thing that you can do is look on other forums and see what other people are running, hint Cgtalk.

I recommend that you go into your Forceware settings and set all your AA, texture details and others to their lowest setting or select the 'let the application choose' option (if there is one - I use ATI) and see if there is any improvement in performance.
