however, correct me if im wrong (which, from past experiance i know i probably am)
if i exported the file into a different program and rendered using that, would i be able to render particles when my g card isnt capable of hardware rendering?

Not to sure about that, but I could be wrong...

Sometimes the hardware render buffer can do it if the card cant do full hardware rendering?? (It worked for my old PC before I got a graphics card)

Oh, I thought you meant something like Mental Ray Stand-Alone.

I do not think anything can take a Maya file with particles other than Mental Ray as a .mr or .mi file, and others like Renderman with a .rib file etc.

Maybe there are others like Monte Carlo or Vray-beta that can but in all cases other than Mental Ray stand alone, I have no idea.

You might need to ask the support of those other renderer's if they support Maya 8.5 files that include certain particle types.

Anyone else have any success in any other renderers like this?

That is a VERY good point as well gster.

The Hardware render buffer is a bit different in terms of workflow for rendering hardware passes than the "Hardware Renderer, but I use it almost daily, and find it super easy to work with, and INSANE fast, as it uses the hardwareuser added image

Check the help (F1) for details on rendering a pass with JUST the hardware render buffer.
