Usually something like this is done in a landscape generator like Vue, but in Maya there are a couple of ways to do.

You could use paintFX and then convert to polygons, that usually helps a little, or as I did once, use sprites and cover the island in those by making the islands a surface emitter.

if maya crashes each time you try to use paintFX then maybe you should make a seperate scene, draw some palm trees then composite the trees onto the final render

that's a "Ch" pronounced as a "K"

Computer skills I should have:
Objective C, C#, Java, MEL. Python, C++, XML, JavaScript, XSLT, HTML, SQL, CSS, FXScript, Clips, SOAR, ActionScript, OpenGL, DirectX
Maya, XSI, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Motion, Illustrator, Flash, Swift3D

i also see you are using a lot of fluids, clouds, sky fog, and ocean, if you do my compositing suggestion then you should render all those into seperate layers, so then you can put the trees under the sky fog

oh, and you'll also have to make sure you copy the lights over to all the render layers or the lighting in the final composition will probably look off

at that distance you dont need detail.., no hero trees.., use cards.., (do a google serch) they are planes with the image of the tree with an alpha to make the rest of the card transparent.., can use it for leaves, trees, people, whatever.., its an old architecture trick but used very often in film production.., stuff like blade runner.., maybe the inside on a space station.., an island.., whatever

Mirek's right.

use cards for far away trees, then possible go into paint FX for closer ones.

if they are connected like in the picture.., then go to the hardware texturing options and select from one of the drop downs.., 'combine textures'.., like in the picture.., see the AE

learn to program and write stuff in the script editor

or just go ahead and search highend 3D for a script like gster123 said
