File Formats

Is it possible that Maya can export models as '.3ds'?

If it is, can anyone tell me how to do this?

Cheers

You can try the Maya .MD3 Plugin developed by the folks at Quakerally. There's also one that exports .map files.

Youll see a link for Maya MD3 plugin on the page I linked above. That's the one you want, not the exporter source code. Anyway, it's easy enough...just drop the dll from the zip into your plugins folder and enable it in the plugin manager (in the Windows >Settings/Preferences menu in maya). Tick autoload if you want it to load all the time.

You could try 3dsImport_nt_4. Can't remember if you can save as 3DS files though. Haven't used it in a minute.

Cheers Dave, I can feel that I am getting close. I put the .mll in the plug-ins folder and goto the plug-in manager. I can click 'auto-load' but I try and click 'loaded' it says ......

'Error: No plug-ins loaded - "The specified procedure could not be found.'

If anyone knows what this means (and more importantly) how to overcome this I will be a happy bunny user added image

P.S. Hey NitroLiq, I tried your suggestion. I loaded the plug-in and went into the plug-in manager and it said everything was ok and loaded but when I went to try and open or save a .3ds it wasn't listed as one of the compatible file formates .... did I explain that alright?

You put each file in the proper folder according to the directions they gave?

C:\Program Files\AliasWavefront\Maya4.5\bin\plug-ins\md3Export.mll

and

C:\Program Files\AliasWavefront\Maya4.5\scripts\others\md3Exp ortOptions.mel

Also, did you download the correct release for the version of Maya you're running? If you're running Maya 5 and you've loaded the 4.5 files and followed all the directions above, loaded the plugin and it still doesn't work, then I don't know what else to tell you. You could drop the developers an email to find out if it's supposed to work in Maya 5. I use Maya 4.5 and the appropriate release of the plugin and it works fine here.

Can't go wrong by putting a copy of the mll file in each of the SCRIPTS or PLUGINS folders you find. Maya feels the need to put three of these folders in different places. Why? I have no idea. But if it doesn't work in one of those, try all of them. One of them should work. user added image

I tried both your suggestions and they didn't work. I am at a loss. I am still getting the same problems as I described earler.

Im still very open to any suggestions that anyone has.

Cheers for trying though
