Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Opening Maya ASCII files

Hi all

I downloaded some Maya model files to complete a tutorial that were in ASCII format, but Maya gives the message: there is an error in opening this file... It obviously doesn't like that format.

Does anyone have an idea in how to open this type of file format or do something to it? I haven't encountered this before.

Any help will be much appreciated. user added image

Cheers

The .mb and .ma file are both maya, but you can open ASCII [.ma] files in a text editor such as notepad and edit/render the work without opening Maya itself.

In your case, the file was created in a newer version of Maya. You might have 4.0 and the file might be 4.5 for example.

You can edit some of the text in notepad [i use ConTEXT] and import it into Maya and it should run. Izzy and/or Kevin should know exacly what to edit.

Also, when working with .MA files, you have to choose FILE > IMPORT, and you have to specify .MA as the file typeuser added image

.MB files can be OPENED, but .MA files have to be IMPORTEDuser added image
