Ive been trying to make a Mecha style robot and this is the 3rd different program ive tried, best results so far, and this is my first project(after about 5 total hours of using the program). So here goes.

I plan to Add more detail after i get the basics down, Suggestions would be appriciated. Keep in mind if you suggest somethign failry technical, might be handy if you have a reference... as im still clueless in a majority of the operation...user added image

if u r using maya 5.0
download the bonus tools from alias.
then explore the poly tools as u go along.
it would be best to use reference images.
and before you continue on, try to create hotkeys to ease your "transition i guess" to maya. very easyto do that preferences>hotkeys.
good luck. can't wait to c ur progress.
don't hesitate to ask Qs

Im using Maya 4, all i could get.
Been using poly tools as i figure out what they do/ have a need a tool i know what it does doesnt work for the situation and need something new.
It woul dbe best to use references, however i draw, watch mecha shows a lot... im failry secure in the look when it comes to basics, ill use reference when i add more detail.
I know some hotkeys thanks to hybrid(a school friend who posts here). But your right, setting them up myself might help.

And people around here are very friendly/helpful. A good componation.

yeah you get the wire pic buy hitting the Ctrl, PrintScreen. and pasting in some grafix progy.. or you can do it in hardware render. thats a bit more involved though..

No, who me ?? falow you around..
No I just read almost every post on the board.

a quick update. Learned how to use bevel a little. The bevel in Maya is so much better than lightwaves its unbelievable...

Well heres a wire and a perspective view shaded. Non rendered. I think the beveling really helps file down some of those harsh angles.

Yeah, i try and at least read every post too... but im member to over 10-15 different messege boards... so it gets to be really hard at times. So i tend to concentrate on a few boards a day.

... almost forgot the image.

grr. one mistake and i lost all the beveling i had done.. i guess i can redo it better now... but still...

I keep having a problem where it seems like im getting overlapping edged... but i have no clue where the extra edge came from. I select(try to anyway) and hit merge edges.. but they dont merge. Any help?

I think ill wait ntill i have more of the leg done before i add the beveling and details. Or do you thinki should do it now?

Redid all the beveling and edded a little more shape to the leg itself. After i finish the head i plan to go back through and add some slight modifications to it that should easily be doable at a later time.

*changed color scheme for now too, to see what might look how later*
