This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

You could add these parts to a new layer and make this layer unselectable.

No it won't.

You have several options: heres a couple
Since its one object, I assume your using polys...

You can use isolate select: Show>isolate select>view selected
( I usually tear off that lil pane so I can toggle it )
with polygons it only works with faces. with cv's on NURBS
select some faces around the area your working ,
isolate select them
then you can change back to points or edges.

{read all about it in the help files. when you get really heavy characters it can really speed things up}

Another option: Instead of using the lasso tool,
use the Paint selection tool: Edit>paint selection tool>options

this is one of my favorites, and definitely worthy of shelf space
it's just like any artisan tool.
*a good tip is to make sure you use the hard edge brush (the 3rd one)
since components are either selected or not.
I usually uncheck rotate to stroke, and make sure toggle is off.

as with anything in Maya there are 100 ways to do stuff,
those are just a few that work good for me.

Thank loads Raster you hit the nail on the head, thats exactly what I wanted! I used the isolate / view selected method.

Thanx again ;-)
