rendering changing background...

is there a way to change the rendered background ? without putting a large plane behind it :p
cause its allways bitch black and for composing its sometimes very very unusable (shadows or simply black objekts..)
or can i render it out on other way to geht the alpha in the scene for adobe after effekts...user added image

The background has no matte, so it is transparent when compositing. Iff, tiff, and targa's have the alpha channel. Bmp and jpeg do not. The other formats I do not use.
