Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Facial expressions - clusters or blend shapes?

HI,

clusters for opening and closing the eyes would be best I think, but not sure about others (smile, frown, growl, scared etc).

Looking over differing tutorials just now, just wondered what you folks thought.

Was thinking the same thing, except for the eyes. Do you know gster, is it necessary to copy your whole mesh each time for each expression? Given the I just want to do the face just now.

cheers,

gubar.

If I was just doing blendshapes on the head then it would be more efficient to separate the head and duplicate that just for the blendshapes.

thanks jsprogg,

but when you combine the head back onto the body, I don't think it will recognize the blends anymore, since it would be a different mesh - is there a workaround?

Does it loose the shapes?

I thought if you sepperated the head form the body then made the different bits re attached it kept them, just as long as the vertex order is the same???

Its ok to make your blend shapes on your detached head then reattach it, the blends will be remembered, well at least from my experience they do.

hope this helps
