Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

BMW M3 CSL

Started another car. This one is to practice studio renders, as I'm still not ahppy with my render technique. I wanted something with some hard lines to practice reflections, so I picked this car to model.

Thanks guys. Sorry that progress is slow, but work is killing me right now. Not much time for fun user added image

Toxic bunny, it's gonna be polys because of all the little ridges running along the car. Tackling those with NURBs would be a pain to say the least. Here's a wire of the unsmoothed surface. I softened the edges a little as the last render was a little sharp along the hood.

Added some details. I need to tweak some polys now as a lost a little smoothness while adding the BMW logo. Also that little ridge just forward of the wheel arch was a real butt kicker to get close to right.

jornkes, no I'm in the military. Playing with Maya is still a hobby. A few more years of practice though and I'd like to give it a shot for pay...

Thanks mc-fleury. I think cars are easier to model than organic things though. I should really try to branch out a little and try something else.

What I mean about the rendering is that I think my modeling skills are progressing quicker than my final render skills. Right now I kinda click the render icon and pray it comes out good. I'd like to actually get a feel for tweaking a render, like when you tweak a mesh pixel by pixel to get it perfectly smooth.

Dilberts as allways very nice work!

How much is important to have exact car blueprints?
I have some issues with my blueprints...hmmm....better question is do you use top view, or is it very necessary to have one?

Do you use split polygon tool or do you use edge looping tool to form an edges?

Damn, I also dont have much time 4 CG cuz of my work...I just hope one day I'll get in.

Anyway very nice start and very good car choise!

Good luck m8!
