Do the Instant Maya (Unlimited) lessons found in the online docs. They really are nicely written and will get you going from zero level to basic understanding of how the program works.

kbrown is right about those docs.. they can do wonders for you in the beginning..
as for other readin' material, check out the Tutorials Forum there are plenty of readin' material in there.. download the free video tutorials that are here at SM.. if the video tutorials are satisfactory you could try joinin' the vip section too.. that should put you well on your way.. just remember not to rush it, one step at a time.. and whatever you can't find or figure out.. just ask, I’m sure there are plenty of people here at SM that would be happy to help you out, includin' myself..
