beginer question from beginer student

heys, am new to maya, am really excited about learning how to 3d design(as you all do user added image ) thought it might be harder for me cuz my english sucks..anyways...
what can you do with extrude faces..
i mean what it's used for..
i prob dont know cuz i didnt understand the name of it..but anyways..thanks for the help..
