Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Straw bending with fields

Hi

I am trying to make a straw bending in the wind (with air, turbulence of whatever u recommend), but i am having trouble figuring out how to make it stand on the ground without having the whole straw flying around like crazy!

Any ideas ??

Sorry I missed this oneuser added image

I would HIGHLY suggest using a softbody curve(s) for this effect, as that is one of the reasons it exists.

Too much to explain here, so I would suggest you check out the docs regarding learning about softbody curves AND GOALS.

Basicly, once you read that stuff, and play around with them, you will notice that if you draw a curve from the ground up, make it a softbody with "make copy soft" THEN you can weight the curve particles closer to the ground so that it does not "sway", but the rest of it can sway however you like the closer you get to the top of the curve.

Then just extrude a circle up your original curve to make some straw-like geometry, and it will follow the animation dynamiclyuser added image

You could also use PaintFX for this as well because some brushes are already setup to animate like this out of the box.
(or CAN, depending on how you look at it) user added image

Hi again

The very very very very very big issue for me now is as follows:

My straw is so complex that i had to group it!!

Is there anyway that i can make a group get effected by dynamics????

Soft bodies is normally made out of geometry - so........ehm - i have tried to put a lattice around my group and make the lattice a soft body, but as soon as i do that the connection between the lattice and the group disapears! :-(

Any advice????

What is your straw made of?? Are it all the same types of objects? If so, can't you combine them so that they react as òne object, so that they can react to dynamics? user added image

Another thing to try (I havn't tried this yet) is to use a WRAP deformer.

Basicly, you surround/cover your group with similar-shaped geometry that is ONE peice, like a cylinder, etc. then read the docs on how to treat that as a WRAP deformer, so that when you paint the weights on your WRAP geometry, it smoothly deforms your grouped stuff as welluser added image

Not sure if that'll work, but its' worth a try right? user added image

why dont you just parent the geometry so you dont have to use a wrap etc. Does that not work? I've never done this so I wouldnt know for sure.
