would i be correct in assuming that the chord of F looks sumthing like:
------1-------
------1-------
------2-------
------3-------
------3-------
------1-------

if this is correct, then how in the name of zeus' butthole can i grow 2 extra fingers to keep all 6 strings pressed down on the correct fret? user added image

is this a stupid question? user added image or is there something im missing out on?

That's a bar chord....just use your first finger to hold all the strings down on the first fret, then use your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for the other notes user added image

A barre chord is a chord where you use your first finger to "bar" the entire fret. The other chords are usually called "open" chords. Btw, if you think barre chords are tough, try learning some of the jazzier chord voicings where you use fingers other than your first to hold down partial barres....carpel tunnel chords...heh user added image

you need to practice the barre chords if you want to get anywhere in the music industry! Greenday have released about 7 albums all based on 3 barre chords! user added image

If you feel you can't manage it you can also play that same chord "F" by doing:

------1-------
------1-------
------2-------
------3-------
------3-------
------x-------

As you can see you just mute / don't play the lower E string. It's a lot easier to fret and I think it sounds better!

Keep trying with the barre chords it will come eventually! It just takes damn loads of practice!

Good Luck!

You don't even have to mute the F note on the low E string. Use your thumb to play it, ala Hendrix, SRV, and many blues players:

------1-------
------1-------
------2-------
------3-------
------3-------
------1------- (thumb)

It's not necessarily correct form but it works. Barre chords are probably the biggest hurdle a beginning guitarist has to overcome. Just take your time. You'll get it after awhile. Pick each note individually so that each rings out clearly and isn't accidentally being muted. Don't over-extend yourself to the point of pain. Don't get discouraged.
