Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

gster - thanks mate. Not sure how to do an occlusion render yet - but i'll look into it... unless you want to give me a hint...user added image

Mr Terminator - cheers - user added image I actually haven't done much work on the robe yet - the arms aren't attached, so if I was to smooth it would just look crap. I can't put it off any longer, so the next update should hopefully look a bit better.

I cant believe you don't know how to do an occlusion render. It's extremely easy.

In your materials attribute editor, just click on the initial shading group tab. Go to the mentalray section, and click on the little checkerd box thats next to the material shader section.

That will bring up a list of mentalray nodes to choose from. Scroll down to the texture section and choose an occlusion texture ( I use the standard Mib_Amb_Occlusion ) . Just click on the texture and render the scene. make shure your using mentalray to render.

ha ha - you're making me feel bad! Thanks for the explanation mate - I'll give it a shot. One thing - do you have to turn on mental ray under your lights and turn on photons?

petrol - thanks!user added image

ok - i must be doing something wrong - when I render, the materials that I have applied occlusion to just come out black. I tried messing with the lights, but it didn't seem to help.

alright - after a bit of research I tried changing the max distance of the mid_amb_occlusion to 100 and I also lowered the brightness. Obviously, it still looks crap...any ideas?

Hey arran,

Looking good user added image Are you rendering with FG on? cause upping the settings may make it better. Keep up the good work

Arran, the Mib_Amb_Occlusion node does not need photons or a light source to work, You don't even need to adjust the occlusion attributes for it to show. Those atttributs control how it looks, not for making it show up, and Judging from your render, it looks like you didn't plug your occlusion node in correctly.

Double check your connections. Make shure you don't have it plugged into your materials common attributes like color, trasparency, ambient, ect, if thats what you have done. It has to be used in your materials shading group, in the mentalray section. The Mib_Amb_Occlusion is a mental ray node, hence the "Mib"

Try it again and let me know if the problem persists. Perhaps it's a technical problem.

EDIT: You don't need Final Gather on for it to work either. FG has no effect on Mib_Amb_Occlusion.
