Iv'e seen the special features on the Star Wars DVD where a guy walks around with a huge hi quality microphone and just recording sounds for audio effects. Does anyone know of an affordabe consumer level gadget that can record good quality sounds?

It definately needs to be digital and not tape based, that way I can just download the sounds directly from the device into my PC.

I use MiniDIsk, and it definetly works great. With stereo sound and everthing. A little pricy still, with line and Mic in, its about 200$.

i have a minidisc, but how do u get recorded MD music BACK onto the computer?

I use my canon xl1s camcoder for sound recording (because I don't have anything else user added image

). It has a pretty good built-in mic + manual rec level control. With external mics I can record four channels simultaneously.

I never knew you could record to Mini Disks with microphones. One last question, do these items transfer data via USB or something?

Probably the guy you saw is using a portable DAT recorder. They're very small, store better than CD quality uncompressed audio, and they're commonly used in live-action film because their sample rate is an exact multiple of 24 frames per second.

Look for a small, handheld portable DAT recorder to cost around $500 to $600.
