new pc

I have a grand to spend on a new desktop, for that i want the whole bundle, a tower monitor and keyboard

Even though I am getting ok with maya on my laptop i am still very naive with pcs and all that spec jargon.

I live in the uk so can anyone advise the best place to get good pc for handling the renders more efficiently than my laptop. May thanks.

If your niave then you porbably don't really want to go building one as you might have more trouble than you need.

Try Evesham as they have great aftersales service and have some good spec PC's.

It all depends on what you want, do you want it just to run Maya?

What DV software as some of it can be quite demanding?

Then again you probably had it on your laptop and if that was fine then there shouldent be a problem.

Probably gonna get some thing with the AMD dual core processors, look for 1GB RAM (more if you get chance), 160-200GB hard drive, and the best poss graphics card you can as this will speed up your animations and your video editing.

Anyone else recommend anything in the price range more suitable?

theres no need to go above 2gig ram at the mo as 1gig sticks aint dual channel so if u get 2 gigs of 4x 512mb dual channel it will run as well as 4x 1gig of single
an 512mb sticks r cheaper

so what are the best grapgics cards? and does it mean i have to spend additionally and get two graphics cards?
Have a look at www.pcspecialist.co.uk and tell me what you guys think. If anyone thinks this is a good site, post me a custom built one with all the spec filled in which will suit my needs for under a grand.

Also anyone else who can post actual full spec would be appreciated.

NVIDIA QUADRO's are the best so look at them bt they r picey
ati firegl series are also good
they say that the nvidia geforces are unsupported but the will work mosly
some thimes they through up issues like u cant see the translate tools or on ramp textures there is no circle and x so u can edit them well

do any of you guys have graphics cards which work fine all og the time? If so, which ones are they? I have trouble following the other rhreads, cos they are a little involved and alot of the time seem to contradict themselves.

Hey Clopper have a look at a Dell Precision 380 they are in your price range and come with the ATI FireGL cards that are recommended by alias (have a look at the Maya qualification charts for more details) so you should'nt have problems with it.

For the price your after i'm not too sure that you will be able to get a PC that will have SLI (the capability to run 2 graphics cards at the same time)????

Pbman - on the Dual channel RAM I forgot theres the DDR2 types of RAM which your friend might be talking about, depending on your system spec you can get 1Gig sticks for it but there not widely available at the moment

Cheers
