Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

changed my mind again

While i have to sttart over anyway, i found myself not really wanting to still do vectorman. I was a little uninspired to make him different from the game. I realized that i should go back further in time, when people had to use their imaginations more. In my search, i found a space invaders clone thats pretty cool. Its got a mommy alien that keeps laying eggs that hatch and go after you. Ive decided to do "Communist Mutants From Space"

concept sketch

well its a sucky drawing put on the comp with a sucky scanner, but you get the drift of what im going to try and acomplish. I may end up making her less human and more ant as time progresses.

started modeling

mesosoma and gaster (abdomen and butt). Just converted to polys...lots of work to do. At least i got a month and a half. Of course i have to learn how to texture between now and then. Ive already downloaded a tut on it but havent watched it yet.

So far wieghing in at 1826 tris/3000 I need to push/pull a lot still and i havent really touched the head yet. Maybe ill do a high res version thats smoothed and has a russian shirt and hat on if i have time to watch that cloth tutorial. No offense to any russians out there. Its a dated game.

Let me tell yah,
your drawing makes your model looks really good.user added image (joking)

I mean your model is getting great but I don`t know if this pose will help you when you get to skin the model.
Well this is just if you pretend to animate or pose in another way.
His shape, proportion I like it very much.

Sorry I forgot.
Only thing that I belive you could fix it is the wing, I don`t see why so many polygons.

Nice start, I like the body shape user added image
As Stormghetto says just reduce the polys on the wing and it'll be a good basis for a low poly mesh.

thanks for the heads up about the arm position and the wing polys. The wing doesnt look as nice but it saved me like a million tris. Ive been a little scared to try and tackle the head but im gonna bite the bullet and try this weekend.

I started work on the head today. Im not done with it yet,but i thought id post an update anyhow. Im liking how its turning out. This is going much more smoothlyso far than my other projects were. I guess that means im learning. 2078 tris/3000. Still need to add geom to mouth, add antenas(antenni?) legs, tweak the model, uv, texture, and make background(probly a bunch off semi-seethrough alien eggs). Still got time.

Your geometry is lookin' pretty clean, badtertle. Mommy C's face is developing some real character.

Keep it up, dude!

thanks swankymonkey. I added the inside of the mouth, legs, and antennas. It comes out to 2734 tris so far. I had to delete the faces on the back of the eyes to not go over. I got over 200 left that i can play with. I was thinking either putting it into a little more wing/face detail or adding teeth for a narly looking sneer. Im leaning toward teeth rightnow. Here she is in all herglory. Also i have a question. Will it screw me up on texturing to have the wings only a plane? Do i need to add depth to make it texture right or is there a way to make it a two-sided face? I dont even know if that matters at all.

I really like your character badtertle, reminds me of a baddy from a cutesy game, you could imagine him with big red cheeks and looking all annoyed. Either that or an enemy of godzilla in the old japanese films user added image

Would the wings be moving fast like on an insect? If so then you probably dont need to give them any more detail.

Looking forward to the texturing user added image
