Poly reduce advice...?

I have a high poly model that I'd like to make a lower poly model purely because of openGL and animation tests. I have tried poly reduce and it seems to work, yet the mesh is not clean at all (5 sided polys, non-planar, and just overall messy) . Can anyone recommend a work around, work flow, plugin, script or something that I might try? I don't have poly count handy as now right this second, but I can find that out if anyone wants to know. Also, can exported paint weights from a high poly be used on a low poly?

Thanks.

Could you post a piccy of the wireframe so that we can see how dense etc it is, then it may be easier to help you out.
