Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Prices

THIS THREAD IS NOT INTENDED TO START A FLAME WAR SO PLEASE DON'T START ONE user added image

O.K.

Everyone talks about how much cheaper PC's are that Mac so I thought I do a quick price comparison:

Apple Mac G5
1.8ghz (64 bit capable)
512 RAM
900mhz FSB
160GB HD
SuperDrive (Cuts DVD and CDs)
GeForce FX5200 (Not sure about performance here)
56K Modem

[B]£1569+VAT/[B]

Dell Precision Workstation 650 MiniTower
Xeon 2.8ghz (32 bit capable)
512 RAM
120GB HD
4x DVD+RW Drive
nVidia QuadroFX 500
56K Modem
Dell 17" Monitor

[B]£1,714+VAT/[B]

Addmittedly the Dell includes a 17" bog standard monitor, but the prices are pretty much the same if you take the price of the monitor off. So what's all this about Mac being so pricey?

From benchmark tests (not Apple's) the 1.6ghz G5 is supposed to be as fast as a 3ghz Xeon so in this scenario the 1.8ghz G5 should be quicker.

It is also 64-bit capable for when OSX 10.3 arrives and Maya Unlimited is released for the Mac in 64-bit form user added image (O.K. so I am speculating).

All in all I cannot really see much difference, only if you build your own PC would this scenario be different (but how much cheaper?) But then you have the hassle of building the machine and having no warranty - BIG PAIN - in my opinion unless you know what you are doing.

Kev m8, your a PC lover care to comment?

Fujitsu-Siemens PC Scenic P 2.4GHz XP Pro

£380 quid with no monitor a 80 gig drive and 256 mb of ram

not the greatest of specs but not a bad PC for a budget, used in clusters well you do the math.

David.
