Transparancy trouble

No matter what file type I save a picture as in Photoshop, it doesnt show the transparancy in Maya when i apply the texture..

Have you tried a TGA?

I've only ever done this once. I made a 9 Volt batt and I never textured the Top or the bottom and the terminals look like they are floating. I textured the batt using a TGA image.

here is the sphere around the semi transparent sphere that should be shown through the transparent parts, this render is shown outside the sphere..

I'm a bit confused. You said "the white spaces are where it should show through" . What should show through?

Try this. Create 2 image files (any format). One is your color channel, and one is the transparency map. Map them to your object as separate files. Does that work for you?
